The Main Art Theater in Royal Oak is closing for the foreseeable future.
With pandemic restrictions stifling ticket sales and limiting spectator numbers, the theater has struggled to stay open – like many theaters across the country.
A spokesperson for Landmark Theaters, which operates the Main Art Theater, did not respond to calls from Free Press.
“It really comes down to finances and attendance,” Margot Gerber, vice president of marketing and advertising for Landmark Theaters, which operates Main Art, told The Detroit News. “The decision was made to try and keep theaters closed that don’t cover their expenses. As to when to reopen, I’m not exactly sure.”

For decades, the Main Art Theater has been a premier destination for independent and fine art films. Before it closed Thursday, the theater’s lineup included Oscar-nominated “Minari,” which stars Steven Yeun, of the Detroit subway, and “French Exit,” starring Michelle Pfeiffer.
While it is not known when the theater doors will reopen, the Main Art Theater is selling tickets for digital screenings of “Minari”. Tickets can be purchased here.
